Christopher "Chris" George Robin Powell (born September 8, 1969 in Lambeth ) is a former English football player and current football coach .
Player career
The left-back joined Crystal Palace in 1987 . In 1990 the Englishman moved to FC Aldershot on loan for a year . From 1990 to 1996 the left-footed man earned his bread and butter at Southend United . In 1996 he was signed by Derby County . Powell played for the first time at Charlton Athletic from 1998 to 2004 . From September 2004 to June 2005 he defended on loan at West Ham United . At the beginning of the 2005/06 season, the left foot straddled again for Charlton Athletic. After that he was under contract with Watford FC and Leicester City, among others. Then the full-back ended his active career.
Powell played five games in the English national soccer team . He made his debut on February 28, 2001 in the game against Spain for the Three Lions , his last game for his home country Powell played on February 13, 2002 against the Netherlands .
Coaching career
On January 14, 2011, Chris Powell took over the coaching position at his long-time club Charlton Athletic . With the third division Powell won the league title in Football League One 2011/12 and thus achieved promotion to the second division. With the promoted team he managed a good ninth place in the 2012/13 Football League Championship . After a significantly worse course of the 2013/14 season and the fall to the bottom of the table, Powell was dismissed on March 11, 2014.
On September 3, 2014, he took over the vacant coaching position at the English second division club Huddersfield Town .
