Christa Petroff Bean

Christa Petroff-Bohne (born 1934 in Colditz ) is a German designer and former professor. She is one of the most important German designers of the 1950s and 1960s. She built up the visual design department at the art college in Berlin as part of the product design subject . She worked as a designer for companies in the GDR .

Life

Christa Petroff-Bohne initially trained as a ceramic painter at the Colditz AG stoneware factory . 1951 to 1953 she studied at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden . This was followed by a degree in design at the University of Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee . She completed her studies in 1955 with a diploma. Shortly afterwards she worked as an artistic assistant at the Institute for Applied Arts Berlin.

In 1956, together with the head of the Rudolf Högner department , she set up the visual design department at the Weißensee art college, which she later took over. From 1966 she had a teaching position at the art college. In 1978 she took over responsibility for the ceramics department. In 1979 she was appointed professor. She continued teaching at the art college until 2002.

In addition, she worked as a designer for VEB Auer Cutlery and Silverware from the mid-1950s , as well as for VEB Elektrogerätewerk Suhl . Between 1956 and 1959 there were more than 80 products that she designed and which were produced in large numbers. In 1984 she received the GDR design award.

In the 1990s, Petroff-Bohne was the chairman of the jury and a member of the jury for the award of the Saxon State Prize for Design and the Thuringian Prize for Product Design .
