The Church of the Ascension of Christ Čačak ( Serbian Црква Вазнесења Господњег у Чачку Crkva Vaznesenja Gospodnjeg u Čačku ) is a Serbian Orthodox church in Čačak in the Moravica district in central Serbia . As a cultural monument of great importance, it is under monument protection (No. SK 535).

history

The current church was built between 1180 and 1190 in the center of Čačak on the ruins of a former church dedicated to the Mother of God. It was founded by Župa Stracimir , brother of Stefan Nemanja . During the Ottoman occupation between 1459 and 1814, the building was converted into a mosque three times . It was later rebuilt several times, in particular from 1926 to 1929 by the architect Petar Popović, a representative of the Serbian-Byzantine style.

The 29.75 meter long hall church has a narthex and a three-sided apse . The central part is surmounted by a 12 meter high dome based on trumpets . The facades are decorated with vertical arcades and long arched openings. The west facade is surmounted by two tall towers.

The monumental iconostasis was painted at the time the church was built between 1834 and 1846 by Živko Pavlović , known as the “Painter of Požarevac”. At that time Nićifor Maksimović was the bishop of the region.

The church has a treasure trove of several manuscripts, including the Gospel of Čačak , as well as a collection of icons depicting a Madonna Hodegetria made by an unknown painter of the 16th century.
