The Church of the Ascension of Christ Dublje ( Serbian Црква Вазнесења Христовог у Дубљу Crkva Vaznesenja Hristovog u Dublju ) is a Serbian Orthodox church in Dublje in the Bogatić municipality in the Mačva district of Serbia . It belongs to the Šabac eparchy and is a cultural monument under monument protection (No. SK 1475).

history

The church was built in 1936 as a memorial and ossuary for soldiers of the First World War in Serbia. It was dedicated to the Ascension of Christ by Bishop Simeon Stanković . Today the building contains the remains of more than a thousand soldiers, including some Austrian soldiers.

architecture

The building was built on a three-pass plan in the modern Serbian style with influence from the medieval Morava school . The facade of the narthex is surmounted by a bell tower, while the five-sided apse has a semicircular facade. The central part of the nave is surmounted by a dome that rests on massive pillars. On both sides of the altar there are chapels protruding from the side facades; one is used for proscomidia and the other as a diakonicon . The facades are with horizontal successive red and yellow stripes and cornices . The vertical openings are located between arcades and are surmounted by small rose windows . The west facade has no special decoration other than the lunette with a representation of Jesus Christ above the portal.

The iconostasis of the church was painted by Stevan Čalić from Šabac .

memorial

To the south-east of the church there is a memorial, which consists of a war memorial to the Serbian Wars of Liberation (1912–1918) and the National Liberation Struggle (1914–1945). Near the church there is also a bust of Milić Drinčić , one of the heroes of the First and Second Serbian uprisings against the Ottoman Empire in 1804 and 1815.
