Christian Grawe

Christian Grawe (* 1935 in Stettin ) is a German Germanist and translator.

Life

Grawe studied German, philosophy and history at the universities in Cologne , Bonn, Berlin (FU) and Kiel. With a thesis on the cultural anthropology of Herder, he received his doctorate in 1966 at the Free University in Berlin. Since 1976 he has taught German at the University of Melbourne and from 1989 until his retirement as a professor.

The focus of his research is the work of Theodor Fontane . Together with his wife Ursula Grawe, he has translated six novels by Jane Austen into German, which have been published by Reclam Verlag since 1980. He edited Austen's letters and wrote her biography.

Grawe published commentaries on Goethe's Torquato Tasso and Schiller's dramas Maria Stuart , The Fiesco Conspiracy in Genoa and The Robbers in the Reclam series “Explanations and Documents” , as well as the volume “Fontane's Novellas and Romanes”, which was published several times. He also published articles in Germanistic journals.
