Life

Hugo studied law and then worked as a secretary at the English legation in Vienna . In 1752 he became a ducal councilor in Wolfenbüttel. From 1753 to 1769 he managed the official business of the Herzog August Library on behalf of the library director Georg Septimus Andreas von Praun . Although Hugo did not have the appropriate training for his librarianship, he continued the alphabetical catalog created by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and made new acquisitions within the limited financial resources. During Hugo's tenure, Duke Karl I added private collections from members of the Welfenhaus to the library . Hugo resigned his office in 1769 in favor of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing . Lessing was introduced on May 7, 1770 in the presence of Hugo, the archive secretary Meyne, the library secretary Karl Johann Anton von Cichin and the library clerk Helms. Hugo was first a monastery councilor, then vice director in 1776 and director of the monastery council in 1783. In 1787 he received the influential office of Chamber Director .

Hugo did not leave any scientific work. He died in 1804, aged 78 or 79.
