Christian Kalvenes (born March 8, 1977 in Bergen ) is a former Norwegian football player .

Club career

Career start in Norway

Kalvenes began his career in the youth of little IL Varegg from his hometown of Bergen . In 1995 he got a professional contract with the big club Brann, but in 3 years he only played one role in the professional team.

In 1998 he moved to the third highest Norwegian league to Åsane IL . At Åsane he immediately got a regular place, was once 3rd and twice runner-up in the 2nd Division Group 1. Due to his constant performance, he received a contract offer from the second division team Sogndal IL , which he accepted.

In his debut season, he then managed to get a relegation place and as a result also promotion to the Tippeligaen . There followed three seasons which he surprisingly spent in midfield with Sogndal before Brann Bergen made him an offer to return.

Kalvenes decided to try again with his "heart club" and signed. Three years of epidemic followed. Right at the beginning of the 2004 season, he seriously injured his knee and was out the entire season. After convalescence had passed, he could no longer fight for a regular place. In total, he came to only eleven missions in three contract years without a goal for Brann.

Successful time on the island

In August 2006 he finally decided to draw the line under the unfortunate chapter "Brann Bergen" and moved to Dundee United in Scotland . On his debut for Dundee, at the Ibrox Stadium against Glasgow Rangers , he scored a goal to make it 2-2. At the end of the season Kalvenes had completed 29 season appearances and was selected as the best left full-back in the Scottish Premier League Team of the Year . In the 2007-08 season he caused controversy in January 2009 when he announced early that he would be moving back to Norway at the end of the season to be closer to his family. In March of the same year, he seemed to have changed his heart because in an interview he thought a contract extension was possible. When he injured his knee again in April and was out for the rest of the season, it was said again that it would have been his last game for Dundee. Despite many injuries, which partially forced him to sit out for most of the season, he was re-elected among the top defenders in Scotland at the end of the season. Another nomination for Team of the Year followed.

After he did not renew his contract, he signed a two-year contract with the then English championship team Burnley FC in July 2008 . The change caused astonishment among those in charge of Dundee, who wanted to extend to the end with the player. As a result, he announced that it had always been his dream to play in England and that he therefore abandoned his plan to return home.

In Burnley, he immediately fitted into a homogeneous team without outstanding players and became an indispensable part of the defensive network of the "Clarets". At the end of the season they sensationally reached the relegation for the Premier League with table position 5 . After victories against the favorite clubs of Reading and Sheffield United , you finally rose to them.

With his Premier League debut in August 2009, he is now the first player from Bergen to appear in the English top division.
