Christian Wacker (* 1966 in Munich ) is a German classical archaeologist , museologist and sports historian .

biography

Christian Wacker studied Classical Archeology and Ancient History at the University of Munich and the University of Freiburg . The doctorate took place in 1996 with Ulrich Sinn at the University of Würzburg with a thesis on Gymnasium in Olympia . He gained practical archaeological experience in Cyprus, Greece, Germany and Brazil. In 2008 he led a research group with Norbert Müller and Reinhard Senff to find the racecourse in Olympia. On the occasion of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , he curated an exhibition on Pierre de Coubertin in the Olympic city . He is also a member of the teaching staff of the International Olympic Academy.

In April 2005, Wacker was appointed director of the German Sport & Olympia Museum in Cologne, which he took up in June of that year. On November 1, 2008, he moved to the Sports Museum of Qatar in Doha as founding director , which he was responsible for building up. From November 2014 to March 2018 he was scientific project manager at the Freiburg Academy for Museum, Exhibition and Collection Knowledge (FRAMAS) at the University of Freiburg. From April 1, 2018 to May 31, 2020 he was the director of the Karl May Museum in Radebeul, founded in 1928 .

Wacker is a co-founder of the German Society for the History of Sports Science, a member of the Advisory Board of the German-Qatari Society , a member of the Board of Trustees of the Sports Museum Switzerland and, since 2012, Vice President of the International Society of Olympic Historians (ISOH). Since March 21, 2015 he has been chairman of the German Pierre de Coubertin Committee.

Wacker is married to the Brazilian sports historian Marcia De Franceschi Neto-Wacker .
