Christian Wilhelm Blomstrand (born October 20, 1826 in Växjö , southern Sweden, † November 5, 1897 in Lund ) was a Swedish chemist .

life and work

Blomstrand received his PhD from Lund University in 1850 . There he became a lecturer in 1854, a laboratory at the Chemical Institute in 1856 and a professor of chemistry and mineralogy in 1862 . In 1871/72 he was the rector of the university. In 1861 he was a participant in the scientific expedition to Spitzbergen ; The Geognostika iakttagelser under en resa till Spetsbergen he collected in the process appeared in the negotiations of the Academy of Sciences in Stockholm , of which he became a member in 1861.

He delivered numerous papers on mineral chemistry, on platinum and gold cyanides, discovered several new minerals and also worked on theoretical chemistry . In 1865 he established that the niobium compounds found by Heinrich Rose were mixtures of niobium and tantalum oxides.

Blomstrand wrote a. a. widely used textbooks on organic chemistry . He also published many articles and studies in journals, including the reports of the German Chemical Society .
