Christoph Friedrich Heinrich Lindemann

Christoph Friedrich Heinrich Lindemann (* 1749 ; † 1816 in Dannenberg ) was an Evangelical Lutheran preacher and regional journalist for Menorca (Minorca).

Life

Lindemann was the son of a theologian from Aerzen. Immediately after completing his theology studies, he applied as a field preacher for the deployment of Hanoverian troops overseas. On August 25, 1775 he received his ordination and the next day he traveled to Cuxhaven and embarked there on October 5. On Menorca he performed the normal service as a field preacher, that is, conducting church services, doing pastoral care, visiting the sick. Because of the long stay and the less warlike situation as a garrison, baptisms and weddings were added. After six years of service, his replacement by the consistory in Hanover was granted at his request. He should only wait for his replacement, which was dispatched quite quickly afterwards. At that very moment, however, the fortress of St. Philip was attacked, besieged and conquered by Franco-Spanish troops. The English and Hanoverian troops, defeated by scurvy, were given free retreat and went to England. He himself went to Calais with the officers via Livorno and France. From London he again asked for permission to return home. In 1782 he finally reached home. But shortly afterwards he became garrison preacher in Lüneburg and in 1791 superintendent in Lüneburg. In 1797 he moved to Dannenberg in the same responsibility. He died there in 1816. He has published books and numerous articles on secular and theological topics.

meaning

The writings published by Lindemann, which concern Menorca, are of particular importance for the cultural studies of Menorca, since for the first time they present the geography, sociology, history and economy of the island from the point of view of reason . In this respect, these writings are under the focus of research into so-called peripheral regions of Europe and go beyond the usual travel literature. This section of Hanoverian military history is one of the best-documented epochs.
