Christos Tsiolkas

Christos Tsiolkas (* 1965 in Melbourne ) is an Australian writer . He became known through numerous internationally licensed works and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize 2009 for his book The Slap (Eng .: Just a slap in the face ).

Life

The working-class son from a Greek immigrant family grew up in a downtown area of ​​his hometown Melbourne. He attended Blackburn High School there and then studied at the University of Melbourne . He graduated with an art history degree in 1987. During his student years he was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper Farrago in 1988 .

Tsiolkas' debut novel, Loaded (1995), was filmed under the title Head On (1998) by director Ana Kokkinos. In 2006 his novel Dead Europe received the The Age Book of the Year fiction award . Three years later, his fourth novel, The Slap , received the 2009 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Novel in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific . The work was adapted with the participation of Tsiolkas as the television miniseries The Slap - Nur eine Ohrfeige ; the series won several television awards and was nominated for an Emmy , among other things .

Tsiolkas is openly gay .
