Christ the King in Wilhelmshaven

Christ the King is a Catholic church in Wilhelmshaven on Posener Strasse in the Fedderwardergroden district .

history

The Fedderwardergroden area was incorporated into the city of Wilhelmshaven in 1938. A large settlement planned according to National Socialist ideas was to be built here for conscripted shipyard workers. Although construction progress was delayed as a result of the Second World War, around 3,000 apartments had been completed by the end of the war. The Catholics living there initially belonged to the parish of Jever. From 1938 their care was transferred to the pastor of St. Willehad . However, the building of a church was not included in the state plans.

In 1945 the services were initially held in a former Hitler Youth home set up as an emergency chapel . It was consecrated in 1946 under the title Christ the King. Then they moved to a room built as an emergency church until the current church was built in 1969–1970. The design for the simple, square sand-lime brick building comes from the architect Gerd Rohling from Cloppenburg. The consecration took place on October 25, 1970 by the then Bishop of Münster, Heinrich Tenhumberg .

Christ the King has an organ built by Alfred Führer in 1959 .

Already on January 1, 1966, the parish of the mother church of St. Willehad took place. In 2008, all Catholic parishes in Wilhelmshaven, Sande and Schortens-Roffhausen were merged to form the new parish of St. Willehad.
