The Christ of Harghita (also: Herz Jesu-Statue ) is a 22-meter high statue of Christ made of stainless steel in the municipality of Lupeni ( Hungarian : Farkaslaka, German : Wolfsdorf) in the Harghita district in Transylvania , Romania . It was designed by the sculptor Walter Zawaczky based on the famous Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro . The statue was completed in December 2011 and inaugurated on August 17, 2013.

description

The statue stands at 953 meters above sea level. M., at the highest point of the village Lupeni. Inside, a central spiral staircase leads into the head, from where a broad view of the landscape is possible. The builders used over 60 tons of steel. 200 square meters of sheet steel were modeled for the hands and head.

The locals hope to become a place of pilgrimage thanks to the monument and thus to amortize the 200,000 euros they have invested. The money came from local businesses and private sources.

It is the fourth tallest statue of Christ in Europe. The installation of lighting is planned to make them visible at night.

criticism

The work of art has received a lot of criticism, mainly because of its enormous size and appearance. The locals and the press were divided. For some opponents, the metal sculpture is a foreign body in the surrounding landscape and in the tradition of the Hungarian Szekler ; If one had taken materials from the environment, stone and wood, this would have been much more appropriate. Some call the statue the "Tin Christ", which means a negative rating. For others, the character radiates a truly religious experience. Many of the supporters think it will become a great tourist attraction and, over time, a landmark in the area.
