Christ of Otero
The Christ of Otero ( Spanish : El Cristo del Otero, "The Christ of the Hill") is an approximately 21 meter high statue of Christ near Palencia in Spain . It was created in 1930 by the Spanish sculptor Victorio Macho (1887–1966) and inaugurated on June 12, 1931 .
The statue stands barefoot, i.e. without a pedestal , on a 150-meter-high hill outside the city, surrounded by pastures and grain fields. It is made of cement and weighs 392 tons. 1,400 tons of concrete were used for the entire monument.
The emphasis on the vertical is striking. The figure is extremely slim. The style is reminiscent of the Art Deco movement of the 20s and 30s, with Cubist elements also playing a role. The artist was buried at the foot of the statue. In Palencia and Toledo there is a Museo Victorio Macho each , which exhibits his works.
