Christ Church (Neuburg)
The Evangelical Lutheran Christ Church in Neuburg an der Donau was built in 1927-30 according to plans by the architect German Bestelmeyer . The church with its mighty tower characterizes the cityscape of Theresienstraße today.
The beginning
The Protestants were in the 19th century in Old Bavaria , as well as in the city of Neuburg an der Donau , a very small minority, even if it there - because of the importance Neuburg as a garrison and administrative center as well as because of Protestant settlers in neighboring Donaumoos - a little stand out stronger. Neuburg therefore did not have its own parish, but only a vicariate .
The faithful presented to the Royal Bavarian Government and King Max II left the castle chapel to them on February 5, 1849 until further notice . In 1854 the Protestant parish already had 500 members. Neuburg has now been raised to its own parish.
On January 8, 1906, a church building association was founded. The two chalk factory owners and councilors Schulz and Philipp spontaneously donated 1,000 marks. The First World War and inflation delayed the project. In 1924, the architect German Bestelmeyer from the Technical University of Munich worked on a church building sketch and a plan. Consul General Fritz von Philipp donated 10,000 Reichsmarks . This increased the financial base to 60,000 Reichsmarks.
Church building and consecration
In the spring of 1927 the Kuglerbräu was demolished. The groundbreaking ceremony for the church took place on July 8, 1927, and the foundation stone was laid on July 24. The parish celebrated the topping-out ceremony on October 28th.
Construction defects on the new tower forced a construction freeze. Despite all the adversities, construction continued. In 1928, Philipp's families donated three bronze bells worth 11,000 Reichsmarks. Higher Regional Court Judge Anton Bracker donated 2000 marks for the altar, the pulpit worth 3800 marks was financed by Privy Councilor and architect Bestelmeyer Mark, and the baptismal font was donated by the Evangelical Women's Association from Neuburg. Philipp's families donated the organ to the value of 15,000 Reichsmarks.
The Christ Church was consecrated on August 31, 1930. Moving into the new church was also a farewell to the palace chapel. There the candles were extinguished and the sacred objects carried into the new church. Philipp's families took on an absolute guarantee of 70,000 Reichsmarks, which covered the rest of the financing. The tower only got a church clock in 1940. In 1942 the last church building debt was paid off. After the Second World War , the Protestant community in Neuburg grew rapidly, particularly due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons , so that in 1964 the Apostle Church was consecrated as a branch church in the Ostend settlement area.
