Christ Church (Oberhof)
The Protestant Christ Church stands on the ridge of the Thuringian Forest in the rural town of Oberhof in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .
history
The hostel "Den Oberen Hof", founded by the Order of St. John from Weißensee , was looked after by a pastor from Crawinkel during the Reformation . The school building that still exists today was built in 1704 and also served as a prayer house .
When this turned out to be too small, the community built a church in 1783 .
In the 19th century, the place experienced rapid development due to the up-and-coming winter sports and as a high-altitude health resort . The Second World War prevented a plan drawn up in 1937 to build a representative church .
In 1950 the local council decided to build a new church. The regional bishop Moritz Mitzenheim was included. Commitments were made but delayed. Even between Walter Ulbricht and Otto Grotewohl a controversy arose over the building of the church, but on July 26, 1953 the foundation stone was laid with the approval of the population . The inauguration took place on November 17, 1957.
