The Chronicle of Buton ( . Tib Bu-ston chos' byung ) is a history of Buddhism in India , Nepal and Tibet of Buton Rinchen Drup ( bu ston rin chen grub ; 1290-1364) from the Shalu school of Tibetan Buddhism .
The work was completed in 1322. It is still held in high regard by Tibetan and Mongolian monastic scholars and is one of the most important source works on the history of Tibetan Buddhism.
The structure of the work differs from the History of Buddhism in India ( rgya gar chos' byung ) by Taranatha (1575–1634) from the Jonang School , published in 1608 . It consists of three parts. The actual presentation of history takes a back seat to a systematic review of all aspects of Buddhist literature, insofar as this was preserved in Tibet at the beginning of the 14th century. It begins with the life of Buddha Shakyamuni and ends with the Tibetan Lotsawas and Indian Pandits , life stories of many Buddhist masters of Indian Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism from Butön's own time and the more recent past (12th and 13th centuries). The actual story is followed by a systematic catalog of the works, authors and translations of all literature contained in the Kanjur and Tanjur collections of the old edition of the Narthang Monastery . Butön was one of the editors of this complete collection of the Tibetan Buddhist Canon . The first part of the work is a synthesis of everything that is directly or indirectly related to Buddhism. All sacred and profane literature is presented, divided into periods, schools and other subjects.
The work was translated into English by Eugen Obermiller (1901–1935).
