Chroococcus limneticus ( Syn .: Limnococcus limneticus (Lemmermann) Komárková, Jezberová, Komárek & Zapomělová, 2010) is a type of cyanobacteria or "blue-green algae". The species, also known as pond blue alga, iswidespread in planktonic areas in both limnic and marine areas. A similar species is the spherical blue alga , Chroococcus turgidus .

features

Chroococcus limneticus forms free-floating, egg-shaped or irregularly shaped colonies of up to 40, but usually fewer cells. These are located in a colorless gelatinous envelope in groups of 2 to 4 cells. The red or blue-green, almost hemispherical cells are six to 12, occasionally up to 20 µm in size and have no gas vacuoles.
