Chrysalis

Chrysalis is a sculpture in the Magdeburg Sculpture Park in Magdeburg's old town .

The sculpture Chrysalis was created by Ian Hamilton Finlay in 1996/2007 from bronze and brass . At just 21.5 cm high, 75 cm wide and 74.4 cm deep, it is one of the smaller objects in the sculpture garden. The sculpture shows a bronze ship's propeller lying in a container made of brass. The container resembles a wooden pallet. One of the wooden-looking brass struts bears the inscription Chrysalis . Chrysalis is the period in which the metamorphosis of an insect takes place, or the pupa , i.e. the metamorphic insect itself. In the work of art, the propeller is the object in the metamorphosis, whereby it is not known which stage the screw represents whether it is to be seen as the beginning or the end of the metamorphosis, and what development is taking place here.

The work was created by the artist for the exhibition of the Art Museum Magdeburg Water, Streams, Times. THE ELBE [in] between suggested shortly before his death. The work goes back to the “one-word poem” Crate (German: “box”) created by the artist . The artist saw in the great biodiversity that results from the evolutionary history that goes hand in hand with constant adaptation and specialization and combines aesthetics and functionality as a model for the ethical goals of humanity.
