Chrysler Norseman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chrysler Norseman was a concept car from Chrysler from 1956. The design came from Chrysler's chief designer Virgil Exner , the design by Billie Brownlie; The car was built at Carrozzeria Ghia in Turin .

The roof was a cantilever construction made of aluminum with a sliding roof that was only attached to the C-pillar of the body. According to the statements of the designers, the roof could have carried eight times the weight of the car despite the missing front supports.

The chrome radiator grille was framed by the sweeping front bumper, above were pop-up headlights . The interior offered individual seats with seat belts and a padded dashboard . To make it easier to get in and out of the car, the backrests of the front seats could be rotated forward about a vertical axis of rotation. The show car was powered by a Hemi - V 8 with 235 hp (175 kW; 238 hp). A total of around 50,000 man hours and $ 200,000 went into the prototype.

In 1957, the Norseman (English for " Vikings ") was to be exhibited at several automobile shows in the USA and to be transferred from Genoa to New York on board the Andrea Doria . However, the ship collided with the Stockholm on July 25, 1956 near Nantucket and sank the following day with all of its cargo. The construction of another copy of the Norseman was subsequently refrained from.

To date, the car has not been recovered because the ship is 70 m deep in a place with a strong current and poor visibility. At this depth, a diver has very little time at the wreck to begin surfacing in time. Access to the hull of the ship is also blocked by wreckage and sediments.
