The red-necked bronze cuckoo ( Chrysococcyx ruficollis ) is a species of cuckoo that occurs in New Guinea .

features

The red-necked bronze cuckoo is colored dark green on top, the head and chest plumage are red-brown. The belly and flanks are white with shiny green sparrows . The gender dimorphism is not very pronounced. The plumage of the male, in contrast to that of the female, shimmers slightly brownish-purple on top. The red-necked bronze cuckoo is about 16 cm tall.

The red-necked bronze cuckoo is only found in New Guinea, where it inhabits mountains such as the Bismarck Mountains or the Maoke Mountains . Little is known about the species and no population size estimates are available. It is listed as not endangered by the IUCN .

Way of life

The red-necked bronze cuckoo lives in tropical mountain forests and thickets in the subalpine region of New Guinea. The main food is caterpillars and other insects. Like all other Chrysococcyx species , the cuckoo is probably a breeding parasite.
