Chrysocolaptes is a genus of birds in the family of woodpeckers (Picidae). The genus includes two species, which are medium-sized and generally contrasting in color, and each inhabit large parts of South Asia. The species are forest-bound and prefer deciduous and evergreen forests. The food that is mainly sought on large trees rich in dead wood consists mainly of large caterpillars, larvae of wood-dwelling beetles, ants and their pupae and other insects.

Both types are classified by the IUCN as “least concern”.

description

The two species are medium-sized woodpeckers with a pronounced feather hood, a long and stiffened tail and a long, chisel-shaped, pointed beak that is broad at the base. The ridge of the beak is only slightly bent downwards. The slit-shaped nostrils are completely covered by feathers. The species have four toes. Overall, these woodpeckers are rich in contrast and, in the case of the sultan woodpecker, extremely variable in color, whereby green, red, gold or yellow tones can occur, each combined with black and / or white plumage. The species also show a clear sexual dimorphism in terms of color ; in males at least the upper head and bonnet are red, in females these parts are of a different color or, like the rest of the head, black and white.

Systematics

The genus includes two types:

The International Ornithologist's Union has the subspecies Chrysocolaptes lucidus stricklandi as a separate species Chrysocolaptes stricklandi , but this division is not yet generally recognized. After a molecular genetic investigation including one of the two species ( Chrysocolaptes lucidus ), the monotypical Reinwardtspecht ( Reinwardtipicus validus ) forms the sister taxon of the genus Chrysocolaptes . A molecular genetic investigation including all species or subspecies of the genus is still pending.
