Ciarán Cannon (born September 19, 1965 ) is an Irish politician. Since 2011 he has been a Member of the Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish Parliament .

Life

Cannon was elected to Galway County Council in June 2004 . In 2007 he ran unsuccessfully for the Progressive Democrats for a seat in the 30th Dáil Éireann . On August 3, 2007, Cannon was nominated by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern as Senator in the 23rd Seanad Éireann and is thus one of the two Senators of the Progressive Democrats alongside Fiona O'Malley .

On April 17, 2008, Cannon was elected chairman of the Progressive Democrats with 51% of the vote. After the self-dissolution of the party had been decided on November 8, 2008 due to poor election results, Cannon resigned from this office on March 24, 2009 and switched to Fine Gael . Noel Grealish became interim chairman .

In the elections for the 31st Dáil Éireann, Cannon was elected for his new party in February 2011. As a consequence, he resigned his mandate as senator. At the beginning of March, Taoiseach Brian Cowen instead nominated the Fianna Fáil politician and former MP Darragh O'Brien as a Senator.

Cannon is married and runs a pub with his wife in Carrabane , County Galway .
