Cillie Hempels
Cillie Hempels († 1642 in Hamburg ) was a German woman who was executed on charges of being a sorceress .
Life
Cillie Hempels had to answer as a prisoner before the Hamburg lower court . The judges accused her of having fallen away from God and of having bewitched and murdered her husband. It is not known whether there were investigations prior to the trial. The court sentenced her to death by burning on Monday, August 22, 1642. Since the Hamburg city law punished murder with beheading, but not with burning, death by fire must have been imposed on the basis of suspected sorcery.
Cillie Hempels died as the last known woman in documents due to trials against witches in Hamburg. Legal proceedings against alleged witches and sorceresses ended much earlier in the Hanseatic city than in the surrounding areas.
