CinemaDNG is the result of an Adobe- led initiative to define an open, freely usable standard for raw video format data . CinemaDNG includes the use of directories for groups of video clips consisting of raw video images, audio data (including multi-channel), metadata , and 3D; and specifies requirements and restrictions for digital negative DNG, TIFF , XMP , and / or MXF in these directories which contain the content of the video clips .

To encode the individual images of the video clips, CinemaDNG uses DNG, which is already known from still photography, whereby the image sequences are either packaged "frame" -based in an MXF file, or stored as a sequence of DNG image files in a specified file directory.

With the "CinemaDNG Importer", Adobe offers a program for importing CinemaDNG video data into Adobe After Effects CS4, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, and Adobe Soundbooth CS4 in the form of MXF files and DNG file sequences for macOS and Windows . Otherwise, the format announced in 2009 is slowly gaining support, e.g. B. by software manufacturers such as IRIDAS, Blackmagic Design with DaVinci Resolve, or Vision Research; or by manufacturers of digital cinema cameras such as Silicon Imaging, Ikonoskop (2009), Indiecam (2010), Blackmagic Design (2012), Digital Bolex (2012) and Weisscam (2012).
