Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro [ əˌdoʊbiː pʁiˈmɪɹ ] is a commercial video editing software from Adobe Inc.

As usual with video editing software, Premiere works non-linearly , i. In other words, you do not have to work chronologically. The edits and changes are still non-destructive (non-destructive), so they can be undone at any time while the original data is retained.

Further features of the program are extensive tools for cutting video clips and a generator for font titles. Premiere uses a similar user interface as other programs from the manufacturer, such as Photoshop ; this enables users who are already familiar with other Adobe programs to familiarize themselves more quickly.

In the course of the development of various versions, the software supports up to 45 video formats or container formats, including DV in PAL or NTSC as well as high definition video . The improvements made it possible to enable resolutions of up to 8192 × 4320 for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC / H.265). Frame rates of up to 60 frames / sec can now be achieved. are processed.

Version history without Creative Suite

Premiere 1.0

Premiere 1.0 began in the Windows version from September 1993 as a niche product, since normal home computers were overwhelmed with playing videos, even in low resolution. It was not until 1995, with the spread of the Intel Pentium , RAM from 16 MB and hard disks with several gigabytes of capacity and sufficient data transfer rates, that video editing with VHS and later also S-VHS quality became possible with a PC.

During this time, Premiere was sold both as a full version and in a severely restricted light version (Premiere LE) in a bundle with video digitization cards. Here an inexpensive upgrade to the full version was possible. So the situation arose that the LE version with the built-in card together with the upgrade was cheaper than the full version that could be bought individually without the card.

Version 1.2 came on the market in February 1994.

Premiere 4.0

Version 4 for Mac was sold from July 1994, Windows version 4.0 from December 1994 (later 4.2 from April 1996), which was almost monopoly in the amateur and multimedia sector. This version was characterized by exceptionally high stability. It remained unchanged until 1998. At that time it was completely out of date and not adapted to new developments such as DV cameras, CD burners and the Internet. A newer competing product from the Taiwanese company Ulead , Media Studio Pro 5.0, with simpler operation and better effects, but also with a more modern surface design, took away considerable market shares from Premiere.

Premiere 5.0

Adobe felt compelled to program a new version in a great hurry in order to be able to present it at CeBIT 1998. The versions for Mac and Windows came onto the market in May 1998. As a result, Premiere 5.0 was so extremely unstable that it was impossible to work continuously with the program. Three updates were released within a few weeks; the third did not provide at least sufficient crash protection. However, Adobe's reputation as a software manufacturer was severely damaged at this point. Although the source code for other versions was completely rewritten in the following years, Premiere was still comparatively unstable. Version 5.1 appeared for both OS in October 1998. For a long time, these problems also made it difficult to get started with the newly launched Premiere Pro.

Premiere 6.0

This version was presented for Windows and Mac simultaneously in January 2001.

Premiere 6.5

Since video editing on the computer became less complicated with better home computers and the spread of DV cameras, Premiere had to deal with increasing competition with this version for Windows and Mac from August 2002, especially since Premiere 6.5, which was available from that point in time, did not yet offer the option of DV - Import films in RAW format (uncompressed video) directly from a camcorder into Premiere, then edit them and then convert them to the MPEG-2 format commonly used for DVDs. Third-party plugins were required for the latter. Furthermore, version 6.5 lacked the ability to edit the films in the YCbCr color model. Adobe directed the program away from the cheap segment towards use in the multimedia sector and by smaller video producers.

Version history with Creative Suite

The addition “CS” stands for Creative Suite and describes a package put together by Adobe of various, proprietary programs. Since Premiere Pro was never part of such a package up to Creative Suite 3, the names CS1 and CS2 are only in brackets in order to establish a chronological classification to other Adobe programs.

(Premiere 7.0) / Premiere Pro 1.0 / (CS1)

In order to underline this claim in marketing, Premiere was renamed from version 7.0 to Premiere Pro 1.0 on August 21, 2003, Premiere Pro CS3 corresponds to version 9.0, but is internally managed as Pro 3.0 (Premiere 1.0 to 6.5, Premiere Pro 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0).

(Premiere 7.5) / Premiere Pro 1.5 / (CS1)

Some updates, such as HDV editing, were introduced in April 2004.

(Premiere 8.0) / Premiere Pro 2.0 / (CS2)

In professional film and television production, Adobe Premiere Pro has been increasing in popularity from version 1.5 and above all from version Premiere Pro 2.0 since 2005.

(Premiere 9.0) / Premiere Pro 3.0 / CS3

For a sufficient working speed with the version CS3, which was launched in 2007, a computer with a dual-core processor and at least 1 GB of RAM is recommended for smaller DV editing projects, with HDV editing it should be two to four GB of RAM, so that you can work smoothly and not have to move too much data to the hard drives. Above all, a quad-core processor with four processor cores increases the rendering speed.

Depending on the output codec used, more than four processor cores are used, which further reduces the rendering time. (e.g. eight-core workstation systems based on 2 × Quad Core Xeon (Mac Pro, Dell Precision etc.))

After Apple released its own film editing software Final Cut Pro , Adobe stopped developing Premiere for Mac OS for four years, but a Mac version is also available from version CS3.

With the update to version CS 3.1.0, it is then also possible to edit DVCPROHD and DVCPRO50 projects in Premiere Pro. DVCPRO50 offers as presets: 480 (24p standard, 24p widescreen, NTSC standard, NTSC widescreen), 576 (PAL standard, PAL widescreen) PVCPROHD offers as presets: 1080 (24p, 50i, 60i), 720 (24p, 50p, 60p)

The version update CS 3.1.1 fixed problems with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) especially for Apple users.

The current update CS 3.2 improves the processing of MPEG streams (e.g. with HDV, drop outs are now recognized and marked directly by Premiere when importing, projects created before the update must be re-indexed). The Sony XDCAM camera series is now supported.

(Premiere 10.0) / Premiere CS4

As in the previous version , Premiere CS4 (from 2008) includes the Encore and OnLocation software , each in version CS4. However, the innovations were minor. The remarkable thing is the support for the tapeless AVCHD format . In addition to the slightly changed surface, the media browser is also noticeable. With this, the drives can be searched directly, similar to an Explorer, and files can be imported into the project or cutting window.

Other innovations are automatic speech recognition. With this it is possible to analyze audio material, with Premiere creating text metadata which can be searched. Premiere advertises with a consistently metadata-based workflow. This means that it is possible to add metadata to the clips after they have been recorded with OnLocation . These can also be searched for certain criteria when editing and they can be sent to the recipient when exporting. Furthermore, the workflow among Adobe programs such as Photoshop , After Effects or Encore has been improved by Dynamic Link. The media export with the Adobe Media Encoder has also been improved. This can now also render in the background.

The output can be done by Device Central on many portable devices such as smartphones or PDA or output as Flash and implemented in websites. It is also possible to export to Encore and burn it as a DVD . With Update 4.0.1, released on November 20, 2008, it is possible to import project files from Final Cut Pro , Digidesign Pro Tools and Avid . This also enables the import and export of OMF and AAF files. After updating to 4.2.1, VOB files can also be imported directly from DVDs.

Version CS4 is supported by the Microsoft operating systems Windows XP (32-bit version) and Vista (32-bit and 64-bit versions), as well as by Mac OS X from version 10.4.11 to 10.5.4. We recommend a dual-core processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM and at least 10 gigabytes of free hard disk space.

(Premiere 11.0) / Premiere Pro CS5

For version CS5, Adobe installed the reprogrammed Mercury engine for rendering in 2010. This creates enormous speed advantages, especially in connection with multi-core processors and a CUDA-capable Nvidia graphics card. From version CS5, Premiere Pro only runs with a 64-bit operating system. A version CS5.5 was released in 2011.

(Premiere 12.0) / Premiere Pro CS6

For version CS6, the user interface was improved in 2012, for example by allowing the buttons in the monitor windows to be individually faded in and out. The warp stabilization to stabilize shaky recordings as well as the principle of the setting layers were taken from After Effects and the multi-camera function was extended to an unlimited number of cameras. Under macOS, the Mercury engine now also supports GPU acceleration from AMD graphics cards from the AMD Radeon HD 6000 series and newer.

Premiere Elements and Premiere Rush

Since September 2004 Adobe has been publishing the video editing program Adobe Premiere Elements , which is based on Premiere Pro, but offers fewer functions and a beginner-friendly user interface and thus focuses on home users. In October 2018, Adobe released the video editing program Premiere Rush, which combines functions from Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Audition and is supposed to be more beginner-friendly and cheaper than the standard programs and is therefore also aimed at home users.
