The circuit was designed and built in 1974 by Jordi Xiol. After a few years there were problems between the local government, who owned the property, and the private tenant. The line was subsequently closed in early 1982.

In 1983 the line was reopened by a decision of the Supreme Court and the city council transferred the concession to the Barcelona- based company Calafat SA for 50 years . In the 1980s and 1990s, the Circuit de Calafat was the venue for the Spanish Copa Citroën and national motorcycle competitions. Currently the track is only used for private purposes, test drives of vehicles and for the national championship in Catalan motorcycle racing (Campionat de Catalunya de Velocitat). There are also driving courses for everyone to improve driving technique.

In 2008 the route was completely renovated and a new road surface was applied. With the approval of the Federació Catalana de Motociclisme i Automobilisme motorsport association , the circuit was homologated in 2012 .
