features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 62 to 70 millimeters. The females are slightly larger than the males. In both sexes, the wings have an orange-yellow to orange-brown basic color. The apex of the upper side of the forewing as well as the edge are darkened brown. Butterflies that hatch during the dry periods are generally lighter in color. A white spot on the front edge of the hind wings is typical of the species. A series of black dots runs through the post-fiscal region . The undersides of the wings are colored pale light brown to reddish brown. A sharply drawn, dark brown, mostly wide, white transverse line, which runs through the disk region , stands out clearly. The hind wings show no tails.

egg

The egg has a yellowish to brownish color, a barrel-like shape, has many serrated longitudinal ribs on the surface and is deposited in long, stacked chains on the underside of the leaf of a food plant.

Caterpillar

The entire surface of the body of the black-brown colored young caterpillars is covered with black-brown, slightly branched thorns. At first they live socially. When fully grown, they take on a yellowish to gray-brown body color, show a dark back line and are provided with strongly branched black thorns on each segment. Two large, black, elongated, eye-like spots stand out on the shiny yellow head.

Doll

The doll is designed as a falling doll, has a light brown to creamy white color and is spotted with many dark spots. The back is covered with red-brown hook-shaped scoli.

Similar species

In Vindula dejone the apex of the forewings is lighter, the white spot on the front edge of the hind wings is missing and the moths show short tails.

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

Cirrochroa thais is widespread in southwest India . In Sri Lanka which is a subspecies Cirrochroa thais lanka home. The species lives primarily in tropical forests, in Sri Lanka at altitudes between 900 and 1200 meters.

Way of life

The moths fly in several generations throughout the year. They appear most numerous after the end of the monsoon season from October to December. Occasionally they suck on damp spots in the ground or excrement to absorb fluids and minerals. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the plant family achariaceae counting Hydnocarpus wightiana .
