features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 57 to 65 millimeters. The species is characterized by a clear sexual dimorphism .

male

The wings of the males have an orange-yellow basic color. From the brownish apex of the forewings to the inner edge of the hind wings, two closely spaced dark brown lines run along the edge . In the post-disk region of the hind wings there are two small black eye-spots with a thin yellow border. On the yellow-brown undersides of the wings, the pattern on the upper side shines through in a greatly weakened form. What is noticeable, however, is a sharply drawn, central dark brown transverse line. The hind wings show short, pointed tails.

female

The wings of the females have an olive-brown basic color, with the basal region on the upper side of the forewing mostly shimmering slightly bluish. The other drawing elements are similar to those of the males. On the olive-brown undersides of the wings, the pattern on the upper side shines through in a much weakened form. A sharply drawn dark brown transverse line clearly stands out in the middle. The hind wings show short, pointed tails.

Pre-imaginal stages

The eggs are barrel-shaped and ribbed. They vary in color from straw yellow to a mottled brown.

Fully grown caterpillars are blackish in color and coated with dorsal and lateral thorns on each segment. The back line is light green and slightly interrupted. There are two tentacle-like horns on the head .

The doll is designed as a falling doll and has a light brown color. It resembles a withered, twisted, half-crumbled leaf, which makes it an excellent camouflage. The wavy wing sheaths and a hump protrude conspicuously.

Similar species

The males of Vindula erota are lighter at the apex of the forewings , the females are less bluish than Vindula dejone .

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

Vindula dejone is found in Indonesia , Malaysia , Thailand , Singapore and the Philippines . The species inhabits both forests and open areas. There are currently 21 subspecies in the individual occurrence areas .

Way of life

The moths fly in several generations throughout the year. They occur most frequently between February and May. They like to suck on flowers, for example on lantana ( Lantana ) and occasionally moist Erdstellen to accommodate liquid and minerals. The caterpillars prefer to feed on the leaves of passion flowers ( Passiflora ) or Adenia species.
