Vindula erota is a butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of the noble butterfly (Nymphalidae)occurring in Asia.

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 80 to 110 millimeters. The species is characterized by a clear sexual dimorphism . In addition, moths of different colors appear during the wet monsoon season and the dry period.

male

The wings of the males have an orange-yellow to orange-brown basic color. On the upper side of the wing, the basal and submarginal regions are darkened brown during the monsoon season. From the apex of the forewings to the anal angle of the hind wings, two closely spaced dark brown lines run along the hem. In the post-disk region of the hind wings there are two small black eye-spots with a thin yellow border. On the yellow-brown undersides of the wings, the pattern on the upper side shines through in a greatly weakened form. What is noticeable, however, are two sharply drawn dark brown lines that delimit the basal region and the submarginal region. The hind wings show short, pointed tails. Butterflies that hatch during the dry periods are generally lighter in color and are distinguished in particular by a light yellow post-disk region .

female

The wings of the females have a dark olive-brown, gray-green or brownish-blue basic color. In specimens of the monsoon season, a wide whitish band runs through the disk region of all wings. The other drawing elements are similar to those of the males. On the olive-brown undersides of the wings, the pattern on the upper side shines through in a much weakened form. A sharply drawn dark brown line that delimits the basal region clearly stands out. Moths during the dry period are distinguished by a much wider white band that spreads over all wings. The hind wings show short, pointed tails.

Pre-imaginal stages

The egg has an orange-brown color, a barrel-like shape and has many serrated longitudinal ribs on the surface.

The entire body surface of the caterpillars is covered with black, slightly branched thorns. The first and last as well as the eighth segment stand out creamy white from the otherwise red body of the caterpillar. There are two slightly curved, thin black horns on the head.

The doll is designed as a falling doll and has a light brown color. The wavy wing sheaths and a hump protrude conspicuously. There are two short tips on the head.

Way of life

The moths fly in several generations throughout the year. They are most numerous at the end of the monsoon season in September and October. Occasionally they suck on damp spots in the ground or excrement to absorb fluids and minerals. The caterpillars prefer to feed on the leaves of passion flower species ( Passiflora ).
