Citizen X is a board game by Rainer M. Engel with illustrations by Stephan Stölting . The well-known game Mafia was used as a template , which was expanded to include various mechanics and features of game theory . The moderation explains the game and provides an atmospheric background. In contrast to similar games of this genre such as Murder in Palermo or The Werewolves of Mirkwood , no player is eliminated before the end of the game.

At the beginning of 2016, a Community Edition was released , through which the game can be played free of charge with a mobile app and freely available game material (rules and playing cards for printing).

Game flow

The plot relates to fictional occurrences in a small town far east of the Urals, which is cut off from the outside world. The respectable citizens try to protect themselves against the nightly attacks of zombies and to find out which people belong to this group. The zombies increase their number as the game progresses, making this task more and more challenging for the citizens.

preparation

The game is played in a circle of chairs or seats. Depending on the number of players, additional items (note / pen, mug / coin) are required in the middle.

The players draw a character card and a weapon card face down. In addition to the identity, the point strength of the weapon card is important in the further course of the game. Now a game master gives further information or the interactive moderation takes over this function. The moderation (→ game versions ) can either provide detailed information for beginners or be very compact for those who are familiar with it.

Night phase

In this phase of the game, all players have their eyes closed and only certain players are called by the moderator. Due to tactical possibilities and leeway for non-verbal communication, the night can last different lengths depending on the number of players. The encounters between players or their actions are real and can be perceived acoustically by others.

Day phase

At the end of the night phase, everyone has opened their eyes. Groups of two then form, which can exchange ideas undisturbed. In addition to the rule of showing each other the weapon card, the conversation can be designed very freely. If both agree, the identity of the other can be guessed at and assumptions must be recognizable as such, since only the impostor's pawn is allowed to make deliberate false statements.

After these discussions, all players look for a new seat.

the end of the game

The game ends on the first night if the zombies were able to overpower the prosecutor. Usually, however, only when the public prosecutor reveals himself to the group and charges all zombies. With 12 players or more he can ask an adjutant to help.

If the public prosecutor is overwhelmed later in the night, the inspector and pharmacist can try to resolve the situation on their behalf.

The game goes to the honorable citizens as a victory, if all zombies can be correctly named at the current time of the resolution.
