The Citroën-Kégresse P17 was a half-track vehicle developed by Adolphe Kégresse , which was introduced by the French army in 1929 as a tractor for the 75 mm field gun .

history

After successful attempts with the "Citroën-Kégresse P7bis" in 1928, the French army decided to introduce a half-track towing vehicle for the previous 75 mm horse-drawn field gun.

The structure was the Citroën C4 truck, which was equipped with the Kégresse chain drive.

Several versions were produced based on the 1929 model. The first model P10 was followed by the models P17 A to P17 E. With each model, more powerful engines were used, which enabled increasingly higher driving speeds. They were assigned to the field artillery regiments until 1935 the successor models Unic P107 were available.

When the Second World War broke out , 1,442 vehicles were in service.

After the arrival of the Unic P107, the P17 were handed over to the mechanized units to pull the anti-tank guns 47 mm modèle 1937 and 25 mm modèle 1938/1939. In practice, during the Battle of France, the anti-tank vehicles proved to be too immobile and too slow.

Part of the production took place in the German Citroën production plant in Cologne-Poll , which opened in 1927 , where, however, only a total of 1,541 commercial vehicles such as buses, flatbed trucks, articulated lorries, cattle trucks and Kégresse half-track vehicles were built (compared to a total of 18,710 passenger cars of the types B14 , C4 , C6 , Citroën Rosalie and Traction Avant until 1935).

  • United States

The United States Army technical service tested the P17 with satisfactory results. The company James Cunningham, Son & Company acquired the license of the Kégresse and in 1932 developed the "Half Track Car T1" from it. There was further work by other designers, but the prototype of the M3 (half-track vehicle) was the only determining factor.

  • Poland

The Polish Army ordered one hundred of the vehicles between 1931 and 1939.

  • Germany

The Wehrmacht used the Citroën-Kégresse P17 captured after the second armistice at Compiègne and still usable under the name of the Ci 301 (f) traction vehicle .
