Citroën Chile SAC , previously Citroën Chilena SA , is a Chilean importer and former manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company Citroën Chilena SA was founded in 1955. In the year or 1963 the production of automobiles started at a plant in Arica . The brand name was Citroën . A source gives a connection to Sociedad Importadora e Industrial J. Lhorente y Cia. Ltda. in Chinthorre . José Lhorente headed the company for a while. The name Automotriz Arica SA is also called.

The Chilean government under Salvador Allende decided in the early 1970s to restructure the automobile industry under state control. To this end, the Joinz Venture Corfo-Citroën was approved to produce small vehicles. Renault and Fiat should make medium-sized cars, while Peugeot should make large vehicles.

In 1972 the company was renamed Corfo-Citroën . In 1980 the name was changed to Citroën Chile SAC. Production ended in 1982. In the same year the company had a share of around 4.5% in Chilean vehicle production (457 of 10255 vehicles). The company is still active as an import company. It is based in Providencia in the province of Santiago .

Models

One model was the 2 CV , as it is known from France . This model was also available as a two- and four-door notchback sedan until 1973 and then as a station wagon until 1979 . In addition, were pick-up and van in the range.

The Citroën Yagán was a recreational and multi-purpose car derived from the Citroën Méhari . It had an open body made of wood and aluminum , designed by Maurice Delignon. The construction time of this model is given as 1971 to 1973 or 1972 to 1976, depending on the source. About 1,500 vehicles were built.

The company also offered the Ami 8 , GS, and CX , although it is unclear whether they were produced in the country.
