content

Yuzu Aihara, a fashionable, spontaneous and fun-loving city girl, moves to a new neighborhood after her mother's second marriage and changes to a new high school. If she is more concerned with boys than studying, it is difficult for her to enter the all- girls school . She quickly clashes with the president of the student council, the hard-working, beautiful but cold-hearted Mei Aihara. As it turns out that evening, Mei is Yuzu's new stepsister and Yuzu is forced to share a room with a girl she doesn't like.

The manga traces the development of the relationship between the two girls and shows how the initial hostility gradually turns into a friendship and Yuzu notices that she develops romantic feelings for her new sister.

Characters

main characters

Yuzu Aihara ( 藍 原 柚子 , Aihara Yuzu )
Yuzu is a self-proclaimed Gyaru , the protagonist of the series, and Mei Aihara's older stepsister. She has dyed blonde hair and green eyes. Her father died when she was little. Yuzu is a daring, direct, and often shameless only child. She loves to dress up, wear make-up and design her school uniform in such a way that it disregards the school's conservative regulations, which often leads to Yuzu clashing with the student council.
While her former girlfriends believe that Yuzu has had experiences with boys and relationships, she has never had a boyfriend. Even if she seems awkward at times, she works hard to get good grades in tests. After moving to the girls' school, she immediately befriends her like-minded classmate Harumi Taniguchi and together they often break the school rules. On the other hand, she doesn't like Mei, with her cool character and arbitrary sexual advances. Even so, her initial frustration turns into a strong romantic attraction, and she develops a need for protection and a concern for Mei's well-being. She tries to be a good sister to her despite her romantic interests.
Mei Aihara ( 藍 原 芽 衣 , Aihara Mei )
Mei is the beautiful and serious president of the student council, top student, granddaughter of the school founder and the younger stepsister of Yuzu Aihara. Both are in the same year. She is cold and relaxed, but also irascible. She is respected by the student body and can act or speak in cruel ways on occasion. Mei had a relationship with a young, good-looking teacher, and Yuzu later found out his real motives, which led to the fact that this teacher had to leave school. Behind the cool and relaxed character, there is sensitivity and loneliness.
As a child, Mei looked up to her father in the hope that he would later take over the school from her grandfather and that she could follow in her father's footsteps. However, he left his daughter alone in order to be able to go on a world tour, whereby Mei suddenly became the direct successor of her grandfather and her workload increased rapidly. Because of her father, Mei struggles to run the school until he returns and takes over the management of the teaching facility. However, as the signs that her father does not plan to return to school build up, her relationship with her father deteriorates. Although she wishes for a better relationship with her father, she has great problems accepting that her father does not want to take over the school.
Harumi Taniguchi ( 谷口 は る み , Taniguchi Harumi )
Harumi is Yuzu's best friend at the girls' school. Although she has adapted, she is different from the other students. Like Yuzu, Harumi also moved from another school to the girls' school. She often breaks the school rules, is lively, friendly, easy-going, astute and humorous. Harumi has an older sister.

Kayo Maruta ( 丸 田 加 代 , Maruta Kayo )
Kayo is Vice President of the Student Council and is a sophomore at Aihara Academy. She is shy and is very close to Harumi's sister Mitsuko. She was already vice-president of the student council when Mitsuko attended the academy and headed the agency. Kayo is the only one brave enough to speak to Mitsuko and mocks her for being childish. However, she has feelings for Mitsuko.
Nene Nomura ( 野村 寧 音 , Nomura Nene )
Nene is an energetic student who is studying at the Aihara Academy for the first year and sees Yuzu as a role model to become more courageous. Suzuran Shiraho ( 白帆 鈴蘭 , Shiraho Suzuran )
Suzuran is a vigilant and unwavering disciple entering the third year of Aihara Academy. Because Mei is the only person she can't read, she has developed feelings for her. In her free time, she observes Mei intensively, which means that she has to take regular tutoring lessons in the summer. Suzuran comes from a wealthy family who refuse emotions in order not to become emotionally dependent on other people. She has an older stepbrother.
President Aihara ( 藍 原 理事長 , Aihara rijichō )
The President of Aihara Academy is the grandfather of Mei and Yuzu's step-grandfather. He doesn't like Yuzu at first because she regularly breaks school rules. After seeing Yuzu appear to be molesting Mei, he throws her off the school. However, he takes this back when she saves his life.

Supporting characters

Matsuri's parents work full time and hardly pay any attention to her. She is Yuzu's childhood friend and lived near her. She is in the second year of middle school . She is precocious, very smart for her age and is not afraid to say things she thinks. Every now and then, Matsuri is mischievous and likes to tease other people, especially Yuzu and Harumi. Like Mei, Matsuri has an apparently manipulative character. To make some money, she sells internet porn videos that she pretends to be her own videos to older men. She develops feelings for Harumi and claims her as her friend

reception

Citrus was featured five times on the New York Times bestseller list for manga in 2015 . Rebecca Silverman of the Anime News Network describes the characters as emotionally interesting, especially the contrast between the two main characters Mei and Yuzu. Their relationship is described as a Yuri version of the Arisa twins . In retrospect, Mei's behavior is often different from what it initially appears in the scenes, which is both unusual and well implemented. However, she describes the manga's disagreeable scenes as unpleasant. With these scenes, the series stands in contrast to more harmless manga series of the genre, which were previously published in English.

The manga series sold more than 800,000 times in Japan alone.
