City Power Johannesburg ( SOC ) Ltd. (short: City Power , German  "Stadtenergie" ) is a regional, municipal electricity supply company in Johannesburg , South Africa . The metropolitan municipality of Johannesburg is the sole owner of the company. City Power was incorporated on November 1, 2000 under the Companies Act, 1973 and began operations in 2001. It employs around 1700 people (as of 2019). The company's headquarters are on Heronmere Road , in the Reuven district of Johannesburg.

After the South African regional elections in 1995, the administrative structure of Johannesburg and neighboring municipalities was reorganized, which in 1997 turned out to be insufficient. The Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council emerged from eleven municipal territorial units . The still inadequate administrative structure led to a financial crisis. As a result, five local governments merged to form the Johannesburg Metropolitan Council . This public corporation established City Power along with other municipal companies .

The tasks of the energy supplier include the provision of electrical energy and the operation and maintenance of the supply network . It is also responsible for the expansion and maintenance of the lighting for public streets and squares in Johannesburg.

City Power supplies around 413,000 customers, which in addition to private households and prepaid customers also include agricultural, industrial and trading companies. In addition, the energy supplier maintains over 17,500 kilometers of underground cables , 846 kilometers of overhead lines with 2200 masts , 18,577 distribution stations and 270,000 public lighting units. The operating facilities also include tunnels with a total length of 14.5 kilometers. The degree of supply reaches around 50 percent in the area of ​​the metropolitan municipality. The other areas of the city are covered by the national electrical energy company Eskom .

Important operating parts (depots) are located in the districts of Alexandra / Kew, Bryanston , Hursthill, Klipspruit, Lenasia , Midrand , New Doornfontein, Randburg and Roodepoort .
