The City Supplier is the first ship with hybrid propulsion that is used in Amsterdam for the supply and disposal of catering businesses. It operates in the Amsterdam canal belt as part of the “Vracht door de Gracht” (“Freight across the canal”) initiative .

construction

The ship is 20 meters long, 4.25 meters wide and has a draft (empty) of 1.00 meters. It was built by Bocxe in Delft .

Within the canals, it is powered by a 52 kW electric motor that is powered by batteries. With a purely electric drive, up to ten operating hours are possible. Outside the city center, two noise-insulated, low-emission Jelmer-Valk diesel generators with 35 kW each take over the drive, which are powered by biodiesel and recharge the batteries while driving. A bow thruster is built in for better maneuvering in the narrow canals .

The driver's cab is in the bow of the ship. The loading space is 85 m³ and offers space for 57 roll containers or 36 Euro pallets . Also refrigerated containers can be transported. The hydraulic crane installed on board amidships can lift a maximum of 17 tonnes, with a 15 meter boom it is still 760 kg. The crane can be operated from land with a remote control. An electric trolley is carried on board to transport the cargo on land up to a distance of 150 meters.

tasks

In addition to delivering to the inner-city gastronomy, the ship also collects the organic waste from these companies and takes it to a refinery, which uses it to produce biodiesel. Using City Suppliers avoids truck journeys in the city center. One shipload corresponds to the load of four trucks. The use of the ship significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions.
