Jochen Schlobach

Jochen Schlobach (born February 6, 1938 in Liegnitz ; † September 20, 2003 ) was a German Romance studies and literary scholar.

life and work

Schlobach studied Romance languages, German and comparative literature in Hamburg, Paris and Saarbrücken. He received his doctorate in 1964 from the Saarland University on history and fiction in L'Eté 1914 by Roger Martin du Gard (Munich 1965). From 1964 to 1972 he was a research assistant at the chair of Claude Digeon, from 1972 to 1974 assistant professor at the Romance Studies Institute at Saarland University. In 1974 he completed his habilitation on cycle theory and epoch metaphors. Studies on the visual language of historical reflection in France from the Renaissance to the Early Enlightenment (Munich 1980) and in the same year became full professor of modern French literary studies in Saarbrücken (after a call to Mainz was rejected) . Visiting professorships took him to the Sorbonne (1975/76), the University of Nice (1979/80) and the University of Missouri in Columbia (1992). From 1995 to 1999 he was President of the International Society for the Exploration of the Eighteenth Century. He died shortly after his retirement on a research trip.
