The Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències ( Spanish Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias , German City of Arts and Sciences ) is a cultural and architectural building and park complex in Valencia , Spain . The modern landmark of the city lies in the drained river bed of the Turia .

history

The complex was designed by the Spanish architects Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela and inaugurated on April 16, 1998 with the opening of L'Hemisfèric .

In the wake of the Spanish economic crisis, in which the Valencia region had to declare its insolvency in 2012, several of the buildings were closed and some of the staff were laid off.

Building ensemble

The City of Arts and Sciences consists of the following buildings (ranked according to the inauguration date):

The IMAX 3D cinema, planetarium and laserium have been constructed as an opening and closing eye on approx. 13,000 m².
A selection of natural laws are vividly illustrated in this three-story, interactive science museum.
A green area that was planned as an access area to the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. Inside, the building houses the Paseo de las Esculturas with numerous sculptures by contemporary artists, surrounded by a rich flora. In summer L'Umbracle serves as an outdoor night club and inside is the Mia club, which is open all year round.
With 110,000 m² the largest aquarium in Europe, with a large number of ocean inhabitants, e. B. from the Mediterranean, fish of the free oceans and reef inhabitants, sharks, schools of mackerel, dolphinarium, Arctic and Antarctic inhabitants (beluga whales, penguins, walruses), coastal inhabitants (e.g. sea lions) etc. The construction was made from the concrete shell Pioneer Félix Candela planned in the form of a water lily .
An extravagant opera and music palace with four halls on a total area of ​​37,000 m²; the construction costs amounted to around 300 million euros. The opera house opened on October 25, 2006.
A cable-stayed bridge, the 125 meter high pylon of which forms the highest point in the city.
A closed event space in which u. a. Concerts, exhibitions and sporting events (e.g. ice rink or the Valencia Open 500 tennis tournament) take place.
