L'Umbracle [ lumˈbɾakle ] ( Valencian for sun roof or shadow house ) is a cultural multifunctional building in the Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias in Valencia , Spain .

With the umbracle, the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava created an oversized portal of over 17,500 m² (320 meters long and 60 meters wide) as an entrance to the “City of Arts and Sciences”. On its top floor, it forms an open-air corridor lined with palm trees and other native plants, which is covered by 55 fixed and 54 floating white arches. The Paseo del Arte is a freely accessible exhibition of sculptures by contemporary artists (e.g. Francesc Abbot , Yoko Ono , Juan Ripollés , Jean Claudi Farhi or Laurence Jenkell ). Inside the building, in addition to the parking garage, there is also a discotheque, which is also used as an open-air discotheque under the name L'Umbracle Terraza in summer and as Mya club in winter .

Plant diversity

Over 50 different plant species, mainly from the area around Valencia, but also from tropical regions, are at home here. The garden is lined with exactly 99 large palm trees , 78 small palm trees and 62 bitter orange trees. There are also 42 different species of native shrubs such as rock roses (Jaras), Wild pistachio (Lentiscos), Buddleia (Budleias) plumes (Plumeros) or plumbago (Plumbagos) and 16 nyctaginaceae (Don Juan de Noche) and numerous various climbing plants , including honeysuckle (Madreselvas) and bougainvilleas , bird's-foot trefoil (Lotus), violet (Agatea), ice plant (Aptemias) and Lantana (Lantanas) and aromatic plants such as rosemary and lavender .

etymology

The name Umbracle comes from the Latin word umbraculum , which means something like "providing shade", this refers to the 18 meter high arches that provide shade for the palm tree promenade.
