Claeys was a group of companies of the Claeys family in Zedelgem , which grew out of the family's forge around 1900 by Léon Claeys .

The blacksmith Alexander Claeys had married into the family in the early 19th century and took over their craft business, which his son Louis continued. When his children grew up around 1900, the forge became a two-wheeler manufacturer and a manufacturer of agricultural machinery .

Léon Claeys, born in 1879 and trained as a bicycle mechanic in Oostkamp , started manufacturing bicycles in 1896 . Léon Claeys brothers continued it under the Werkhuizen Gebroeders Claeys company and the Flandria brand .

Meanwhile, Léon Claeys turned to the manufacture of threshing machines and founded the Werkhuizen Léon Claeys in 1906 . In 1932, his son Louis designed the company's first combine harvester , which in 1933 had around 600 employees. During the Second World War , the factory was confiscated by the German Air Force . In 1953, the company's first combine harvester that did not require draft animals or vehicles followed. In 1958, New Holland took a share in the company, which had operated under the name Clayson since 1963 . In 1964, she took over the majority of the shares and renamed them New Holland NV . Léon Claeys died in 1966. In the early 2010s, the company in Zedelgem was the largest in West Flanders with around 2,000 employees .
