Claire McDowell (born November 2, 1877 in New York City , † October 23, 1966 in Hollywood , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress who became known worldwide, especially during the silent film era.

Life

Claire McDowell was born in New York City in 1877 to Jack and Maria McDowell (née Presquell). She studied acting and began her artistic career in theaters. In 1906 she married the actor Charles Hill Mailes, with whom she made many films in later life. The marriage lasted from January 23, 1906 to February 17, 1937, the death of Charles. She had two children from him, Robert and Eugene. In 1908, McDowell first appeared in a movie in The Devil . For the New York film company Biograph Company she played in numerous one- and two-acts in the following years , mostly under the direction of David Wark Griffith . The actress was used mainly in maternal roles during the silent film era.

Claire McDowell made more than 350 films, many of which are known to this day. The best known are The Sign of Zorro (1920), The Great Parade (1925) and Ben Hur (1925). After the start of talkies in the late 1920s, McDowell's popularity quickly waned and she only received minor supporting roles by the end of her career. Claire McDonwell shot until 1945, when she had to give up acting for health reasons and retired. She died in Hollywood on October 23, 1966 at the age of 88.
