Jennie, the poor Bakers' daughter, secretly adores Hugh, the son of a wealthy tobacco grower, while the latter loves Irene, the calculating daughter of a socially equal family. During the American Civil War , Jennie, unrecognized, saves him from capture by enemy Union soldiers . The father's property is looted and burned down by guerrilla fighters . As a result, Irene leaves him in favor of a Union officer. Poor Jennie confesses her love to Hugh and the loyal house servant hands over the family fortune he has brought to safety.
