The father, an officer, is drafted into the American Civil War on the Confederate side . He leaves his wife and daughter in the care of George, their faithful servant. After his father's death, George continues to selflessly fulfill his duty, even as a Union soldier, looting and burning the widow's house. He saves the daughter and the saber of the deceased father. The continuation of the story tells His Trust Fulfilled .
