Lottie Pickford (actually Charlotte Smith ; born June 9, 1893 in Toronto , Ontario , † December 9, 1936 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American actress of Canadian origin in the silent film era . She was the younger sister of Mary Pickford and the older sister of Jack Pickford .

Life

Lottie Pickford was born the second of three children to actress Charlotte Hennessey and her husband John Charles Smith. All three children were involved in the film business from an early age. After the breakthrough of her older sister Gladys Smith, who went by the stage name Mary Pickford , the two younger siblings also adopted the name for their acting careers.

Lottie Pickford began her career in 1909 and, like her older sister, was signed by David Wark Griffith for his American Mutoscope and Biograph Company . Pickford made 25 short films by 1910 alone, and in 1914 his first leading roles in major film productions followed.

In addition to small appearances in films of her big sister Mary and supporting roles in films such as His Trust from 1911, Pickford was seen as a maid Lola in The Man with the Whip in 1925 . In the same year she ended her career as an actress.

Aside from her film career, Lottie Pickford was best known for her dissolute private life and the parties she organized. She was married a total of four times, most recently to John William Lock since 1933. From their first marriage, Pickford had a daughter born in 1915. After years of increasingly ill health from alcoholism, Lottie Pickford died on December 9, 1936, at the age of 43, of a heart attack at her Beverly Hills mansion. She was buried in the Pickford family grave in Forest Lawn Memorial Park .
