Claire V. Broome

Claire Veronica Broome (* 1949 in England ) is an American infection epidemiologist .

Broome's parents emigrated with her from England to the United States in 1951 . Claire Broome earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1970 and an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1975 with a medical degree. She worked as an intern at the University of California, San Francisco , and Massachusetts General Hospital . In 1981 she passed the specialist examination in internal medicine . Since 1979 she worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from 1994 to 1999 as deputy director, in 1998 as executive director. From 2000 to 2006 she was senior advisor in the Integrated Health Information Systems department of the CDC. In 2006 she retired as Assistant Surgeon General . Broome is (as of 2020) an adjunct professor for global health at Emory University .

Broome has made a name for itself in developing and testing vaccines and vaccination strategies against pneumonia (see Pneumococcal Vaccination ) and meningococcal meningitis (see Meningitis # Prevention and Hygiene Regulations ). She has advised numerous organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation , the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Wellcome Trust, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Broome was elected to the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine ) in 1996 . She received the Maxwell Finland Award from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) in 2020.

According to the Scopus database, Claire V. Broome has an h-index of 63, according to Google Scholar one of 83 (as of July 2020).

Since her retirement, Broome has been committed to climate protection and the expansion of the use of renewable energies in California .
