Clarence Gaines
Clarence E. "Big House" Gaines (born May 21, 1923 in Paducah , Kentucky , † April 18, 2005 in Winston-Salem , North Carolina ) was an American college basketball coach .
As the coach of Winston-Salem State University , he won 828 games between 1946 and 1983, with which he is only outbid in college basketball by Dean Smith , Adolph Rupp , Bobby Knight and Jim Phelan . Past players include well-known former NBA player Earl Monroe . On May 3, 1982, Gaines was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
