Clarin (shawm)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The clarin (also Clari , Occitan , masculine , read: klaˈri ) is a traditional shawm instrument of the Bigorre (Central Pyrenees ). It is between 22 and 26 cm long, has a conical inner bore, seven finger holes on the front and one on the back. The wooden body (often box ) could be turned or carved by hand. In addition to round instruments, there are also instruments with a polygonal cross-section. The instrument has a piercing high sound and was played by shepherds and farmers until the mid-20th century - especially in connection with singing. Reconstructions have been made from preserved instruments since the 1990s.

There is also literary evidence of a 30 to 45 cm long form of the instrument called Clarou , of which no specimens have survived .

A closely related instrument is the txanbela , which is common in the French- Basque region of Soule . For other Occitan double reed instruments see the article Autbòi .
