Clarisse Nicoïdski (born Abinoun , born August 9, 1938 in Lyon , † December 23, 1996 in Étampes ) was a French writer and Sephardic poet.

Life

Nicoïdski came from a family of Sephardic Jews from Sarajevo. Her father Moïse Abinoun wrote a memory book about his hometown: Lumières de Sarajevo . From 1954 to 1959 Nicoïdski lived with her parents in Morocco and attended the Lyceum in Casablanca. After returning to France, she studied linguistics and English in Paris, where she also met her husband, the painter Robert Nicoïdski .

In 1963 she gave birth to a son and published her first novel Le Désespoir tout blanc , which was later adapted for the theater by Daniel Mesguich and was the start of a series of novels about the protagonist Judith , who had autobiographical traits.

She also wrote art-critical writings on the painters Chaim Soutine and Amedeo Modigliani and in 1994 published Une histoire des femmes peintres des origines à nos jours (German: The great female painters - female art from the beginning to the present ).

She also wrote poems in Sephardic, which the Argentine poet Juan Gelman described as diaphanous like fire . She is considered the most important Sephardic poet of the 20th century (Enrique Krauze). The Argentine-Jewish singer Dina Rot congenially set the song cycle UNA MANU TUMÓ L'OTRA , a selection of Sephardic poems by Clarisse Nicoïdski and Juan Gelman. Her opera libretto Les Cerceaux de feu was set to music by Bruno Ducol . In December 1996, Nicoïdski died of cancer.
