Juan Gelman (2007)

Juan Gelman (born May 3, 1930 in Buenos Aires , † January 14, 2014 in Mexico City ) was an Argentine poet , prose writer , journalist and translator . In 2007 he was awarded the Premio Cervantes , one of the most important literary prizes in the Spanish-speaking world.

Life

Juan Gelman was born in 1930 in Buenos Aires in the Villa Crespo district as the third son of Jewish immigrants from Russia . He learned to read very early and was active in various literary movements in his youth. He also held important positions as a journalist.

Gelman lived in exile for a long time since 1975 because of his political commitment . During the Argentine military dictatorship , his son Marcelo was kidnapped, tortured and murdered in 1976 - see his poem MA , printed in Marcelo Brodsky's essay Buena Memoria from 1997. Gelman's daughter-in-law María Claudia García de Gelman was also pregnant during the operation Condor kidnapped in Buenos Aires in 1976 and brought to Uruguay . Her fate is still not entirely clear, she is one of the 30,000 or so people who disappeared under the dictatorship. After long years of research, Juan Gelman was able to locate his granddaughter Macarena Gelman in Uruguay in 2000, where she had been adopted by a member of the military.

In 1997 Gelman received the Argentine Premio Nacional de Poesía (National Prize for Poetry). Juan Gelman last lived in Mexico .

Gelman died on January 14, 2014 in Mexico City at the age of 83. The Argentine President Cristina Kirchner then ordered a three-day state mourning in Argentina .
