The Claroteidae are a fish family from the order of the catfish-like (Siluriformes). They occur in rivers and lakes in Africa.

features

Claroteidae have a moderately elongated body and four pairs of barbels around the large mouth. The short-radiated dorsal fin and the pelvic fins each have a powerful hard beam. An adipose fin is present. The anal fin is short. The dentals have an extension on the underside where they meet.

Systematics

The Claroteidae are assigned to the superfamily of the Siluroidea in the classical systematics and were previously regarded as part of the spiny catfish (Bagridae). Molecular biological studies confirmed the independence of the Claroteidae as a family that was placed in the “Big Africa” group.

Genera and species

The family comprises eight genera and over 60 species :

The Auchenoglanididae , originally a subfamily of the Claroteidae, are now an independent catfish family.
